When I’m in Chiang Mai I usually max out on northern food and also central Thai food. But this time I was there by myself and wanted Western food for a change. I’d say Greensmoked was the perfect place to go for this occasion, because it’s a place that serves a lot of small dishes so a solo diner can order and savour many things. Even the pizzas come in half size, perfect for one person, and I had room to try other things.Â
OK well let’s talk about the venue first. The location is an easy walk southwards from the South side of the old city moat, about 10 minutes. The place is on a quiet road, not all that noticeable if you didn’t know where it was already, it’s quite discreet from the outside. Apparently it used to be an old ice cube making factory, and the revamped interior does ooze understated industrial chic nicely. The industrial look is juxtaposed by the open kitchen that never seemed hectic to the diners, but lends enough movements and actions to make the atmosphere more lively than the cold appearance of the venue would have given.
I started of with a pulled pork taco (130 baht each), this is smaller than the average sized taco, I’d say 2-3 bites. There’s a lot of sauce in there so there’s no way the sauce won’t spill out when you bite into it. Next was the skewered grilled beef brisket with gorgonzola aioli and pureed chimichurri (340 baht). I think the flavour was really nicely balanced, although the beef brisket could have been a little bit more tender and it would have been perfect. Â
The best thing here according to a lot of reviews I read online has been the pizza, and they are not wrong here. I ordered the green troll pizza (265 baht), which is topped with Italian sausage, sour cream, mozzarella, and drizzled with basil oil. This was one of the best pizza I had in a long while. The dough was excellent, crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Honestly, I would come back here again with friends and order 2 big pizzas.Â
I did order one glass of red wine, so all of these together came to 1000 baht on the bill. For Chiang Mai prices this is probably more on the high side, but then again western cuisine with wine I don’t think it’s unreasonable.Â
