Bangkok is by no means short of Chinese restaurants that serve Dim Sum. Most of the large big-name luxury chain hotels like The Mandarin Oriental, JW Marriott, Renaissance, Conrad and The Four Seasons, to name just a few, all capitalise on this weekend lunch tradition. But in recent years, smaller hotels and independent Dim Sum places have cropped up, and they are no longer the cheaper and less quality alternatives to hotel Dim Sum that they once were deemed. If anything, these are considered more interesting and desirable options for the younger diners. Let the old folks go to The Shangri-la and The Peninsula, that kind of thinking.
So here we compile five of the best Dim Sum spots in Bangkok, hotel or independent, all are included here. We’d say that this was an extremely tough list to compile because of the sheer number of good places in the city and the players involved. Don’t see your favourite place here? Then write in the comment what we might have missed.
Our Picks
With its older location in Chinatown, we prefer the newer swankier outpost in Arnoma hotel in Ratchadamri. The decor and atmosphere matches the restaurant’s refine dim sum. Must try’s include the red ha-gow with foie gras.
Yes, it’s a bit far from downtown and there is a newer branch in Ekkamai, but we still like going to the Rama 9 road soi 41 location for its spaciousness and green surroundings. The dim sum here is excellent and the peking duck is arguably one of the best in town.
When it first opened, there was much fanfare about Chef man truly raising the bar on Bangkok’s dim sum scene. More competition has popped up over the years but Chef Man still maintains its reputation as being one of the top in the city.
A rather new addition to the city’s list of many players, but Wah Lok quiet elegance and quality is not to be underestimated. In fact, we like that it’s still relatively under the radar for a lot of people. The food is delicious with attentive service, with many of the baked dishes truly shine.
Over the years expanded into a big chain of high end Chinese restaurants in shopping malls with many locations. But just because it’s in malls doesn’t mean that it’s inferior to the dim sum in big hotels. While we appreciate that it’s raised the bar on mall dim sum, we pick the Sukhumvit 39 branch for its calmer atmosphere.
